It's not easy to create a good quiz, especially if your quiz will be played by lots of different people with a different background and knowledge. However there are few rules of thumb, which you can take into account, if you want to create an interesting fun online quiz:

Ask questions about funny, surprising facts

To make your quiz interesting, ask questions about funny, surprising facts. When the player reads the question, he should be dazzled. The answer to the questions should be surprising, funny, stunning, wonderful or new to the player. This will give the player a 'learning kick' and give him the motivation to take more questions or even take more quizzes.

Not too difficult and not too easy

Your quiz questions can be difficult, but not too difficult. The questions can also be easy, but not too easy. A good question should have most of the people thinking they know the answer. A good rule is the following: if 30% of all the players answered a question correclty, the question is a good quiz question.

Build up the tension

A good quiz has a certain gameplay. This is especially important for an online quiz: first, you start with the easy questions, which leave most people thinking they can handle the quiz and carry on. Then, the more difficult questions are raised. Near the end of the quiz, some 'guessing' questions can be raised, e.g. 'How many people live in Mexico City?'. There is not one who knows the answer to that question exactly, but people can guess or pick one of the options in a multiple choice question. This is fun, because everybody knows that no-one knows the answer, so it's OK to guess.

Stick to the subject

All the questions in a quiz should handle one subject. A quiz has a certain category, theme or subject. Questions, which are not about the subject of the quiz, seem very difficult for the player and demotivates him. Also try to use the answer of a previous question in the next questions. This creates a kind of 'learning curve' and the player will think he learned something afther he played the quiz (which is in fact true).
